My clients often tell me they have a dress code so cannot necessarily go all out with their style personality if it doesn’t fit into their dress code. How can they wear their authentic style if it goes against their dress code at work. The answer is express yourself individually through your choice of colour, shoes and accessories.
Adopt a Signature Colour. A power colour commands attention. Pick a colour and make it your own. Many companies brand themselves around a certain colour. Colour is an excellent way to break out of the monotony of white shirts. Try a Blue or pink instead. Wear a funky tie if your company allows this.
Shoes bring personality to the conservative business suit. Well-designed shoes show confidence and authority. Shoes should always be in mint condition; make sure they are polished and no worn-down heels. Closed-toe shoes are the business norm. Open-toe shoes during summer months are acceptable, if approved by the company.
Accessories. Less is more in business dress. Upgrading your accessories will set you apart as someone who appreciates quality and detail.
- Choose a leather briefcase in black or brown with a sleek, compact design.
- A Leather belt with silver or gold buckle is good; match the belt and shoe colour.
- For men cufflinks look very polished, and so does a linen or silk pocket square.
- For women wear a scarf. It gives your business suit, a silk blouse, or a cashmere sweater more punch.
- Earrings should be small and not dangling.
Three ways to showcase your signature style is through colour, your shoes and accessories. What are you doing or would do to showcase your personal style?
