3 Ways to Improve your Verbal Communication

(Recorded from a Facebook Live)

Everyday you are judged by what you say and how you say it. Mastering verbal communication is key to elevate your personal brand.

The words you use to communicate verbally are important. How you communicate while speaking on the phone, in job interviews and presentations are critical. If you want to improve your verbal communications the 3 areas to work on are: vocabulary, grammar and filler words.

Vocabulary

Work on expanding your vocabulary. A larger vocabulary helps you express yourself more effectively. However, be careful to not use words you may not know the meaning of as it can confuse people. Do not use unnecessarily long words if they do not add value, instead use simple language when speaking as you will be more likeable and seen as down to earth.

Grammar

Using correct grammar will give you a more credible message. You may be judged for making grammatical errors. To overcome this practice using correct English regularly rather than slang. Think about who you are speaking to. You probably wouldn’t speak to your friends the same way you would your boss.

Filler words

Minimize filler words such as um, ah, like, you know in your conversation. This one is easier said than done. When you use a lot of filler words you may appear nervous or sound uncertain. It can also be distracting to the person listening. They may start noticing the filler words more than the message you are trying to get across.
